Gourde & Art

This is one of the largest things we had ever seen growing from a tree. It is a Gourde. Haitian currency is also called Gourde(s). When we were at our friends house last weekend they gave us the full Gourde education and then let the girls take it apart to make bowls with it. The inside is not used, but the outer part is.

Britt used a rock and slammed the rock down on top of the knife until the hard outer shell split.

The inside is a grayish-white color. It smelled sort of icky. They dug it out with spoons, it was almost the same consistency as the sides of a pumpkin, or a little tougher.

The girls brought them home and painted them yesterday. Paige's is decorative on her shelf and Britt's is functional, holding pens and pencils.

Before plastic was readily available, Haitian ladies used the Gourde shell to transport water.

Last Friday we were able to listen to a MN HighSchool Football game in Haiti, with about a 7 second delay. That was so weird and cool. Family tradition up to this point has been to go support our brother as he coaches each Friday night ... we are pretty excited that we can hear the game.

He is fun to watch coach because he is intensely competetive but better than that he is a good guy and wants to teach his players some values ... so he does not swear and act like a fool, you might even hear him scream "OH MY GOODNESS" when the officials make a bad call. It is very refreshing.

Matt - Good luck tonight, you have provided us with fun Friday night entertainment.

Go Rangers.
