More Hands That Hurt

This hand belongs to Gladimir. He is 12 and lives in Barbancourt. He cut his finger earlier this morning while cutting down a coconut with a machete. He was really scared apprehensive. I don't blame him; I don't know how willing I would be to trust some crazy blan that I just met. He was not coming around, crying and wiggling. My smart mother brought down the portable dvd player to distract him from his misery. He sat and watched Shrek in English. I kept looking over and laughing because it must have been crazy to him, a talking donkey speaking a foreign language? But it worked, and it went very well. When I was in MN in August, Dr. Jen taught me an awesome technique for numbing fingers; those stinky pigs feet were so worth it! It was perfect. Even though I was tired, it was actually kind of fun - because it went so well and it was rather entertaining to suture to the sounds of Shrek & Donkey.
